Having the hard conversations
Today was the day that I had to have one of those hard conversations with my boss. Today was my annual review at work. It's been a hard year for me (2011), I didn't hit the work related goals that I had set for myself and overall it was my third straight year of rebuilding my line of business.
After almost a 3 hour conversation I've gotten a lot off my chest and I'm hoping that now I can officially put 2011 behind me and hit 2012 full force.
My thought of the day is that no matter how hard that conversation is to have--have it sooner rather than later, you may not get the exact outcome that you want but at least you've put your thoughts, feelings and concerns out there...

Today We Remember

Where were you on 9-11-01?
I sat in my sophomore physics class on September 11, 2001
I remember the teacher always leaving on CNN without the sound while he taught-because what sophomore really watches CNN anyhow right? Just as he was getting ready to start the lesson you saw the photos of the first tower. As we stopped and turned on the sound we watched as the second tower was hit...
I remember going home and watching and learning of Flight 93 crashing in Shanksville just 2 hours and 45 minutes from Grove City, PA. I remember hearing of the attach on the Pentagon.
Today we remember the 10 years following Flight 11 crashing into the North tower at approximately 8:46amEST
Never Forget.

Does the universe have it in for me?
OK so this week is only 2 day in and it has been just pretty much a bad one to say the least!
(I apologize in advance for lack of punctuation, and run on sentences in the below rant)
Monday started off with a million and one things that I needed to get done at work where I spent the majority of the day "putting out fires" then came home realized that the cleaning lady didn't come clean the apartment as scheduled, so I feel like the apartment is a wreck....I go to the gym which is completely packed and I was only able to get in 25 minutes of cardio before my lecture, which was a total waste of 2 hours. Then I wanted to do some yoga but the on demand wasn't working so I gave up and went to the store to get a bottle of wine (the one highlight of the night)....then took a shower somehow broke 2 of my nails and of course since Rene is out of town the cat had puked on the carpet so I got to clean that up after a shower.
So here I was hoping today would be better....I was wrong. My body didn't want to get up this morning, then my coffee filter got messed up and coffee grinds ended up all through my tropical toasted coconut kona coffee (which is amazingly good) so was hoping to get some Starbucks. I hit every red light on the way to work so couldn't stop at Starbucks and had to deal with office coffee Yuck! Then the Internet was down at the office and I got to play catch up with emails on my phone for the first 30 minutes of my day. This was all before 8am.
So then I meet with my team and listen to the recruiters go on and on about wanting more training an insisting on me spending 2 hours to go over our standard contract which they could just read on their own. My director then tells me I'm spending too much time giving them piece by piece info and they can learn on their own, yet at the same time wants me to be more supportive and have an open door policy to allow them to express their needs....wow I am completely lost as to what I should be doing....dead end there!
Put more fires out all afternoon because a doctor just backed out of working confirmed shifts for the next four weeks and we have no backup, then chase down time cards, follow up on contracts and a million and one other things before heading home getting frustrated that the gym is packed and come home....
Thank the lord the on demand worked and I got a nice hour long yoga practice in to try to relax. I am starting to think the universe has something out for me there is no doubt!
When I have days/weeks like this I take a look at my zodiac it will usually allow me to at least pretend that yes the universe is out to get me but it'll look up....today I am not feeling that way, here are a few of the reasons my my past few days turmoil per the stars...

“Your normal steady pace usually wins the race, Capricorn, but today you might need to take some shortcuts. Jump on opportunities that seem to come out of nowhere, but don't feel like you need to commit to anything now. Take your chances and see where luck takes you”

“You're ready for dramatic change in your life, Capricorn. It isn't that you're dissatisfied with your career or personal life. Rather, you feel like you're missing out on something great, if you only knew what. Be receptive to whatever opportunities arise and explore them all. You may find the answers you seek through travel or more education. Bring a friend if you’re afraid to explore on your own”

“You may be tempted by an unrealistic fantasy about a relationship now. However, your idealistic dreams can actually stand between you and happier days. Acknowledging your attachment to one particular outcome is a good start if you're willing to make it less important. There's no need to go to extremes and deny your preferences if you can maintain a healthy perspective”

“You like to lean on conservative tactics when your life gets too crazy. Mechanically going through the motions is one way to buy time while things settle down. Unfortunately, reverting back to your old routine won't work now because something must change for you to feel satisfied. You may be tempted toward extreme solutions like turning everything upside down all at once. However, taking lots of tiny steps is a much better strategy than attempting one gigantic leap before you're ready.”
I am having some difficulties trying to figure out how these relate to my past 2 days….any thoughts?
I was half scared to look at my Wednesday outlook….but I did it anyhow…
Tomorrow:
“You may be tempted by an unrealistic fantasy about a relationship now. However, your idealistic dreams can actually stand between you and happier days. Acknowledging your attachment to one particular outcome is a good start if you're willing to make it less important. There's no need to go to extremes and deny your preferences if you can maintain a healthy perspective.

A relationship may be a major source of stress now as battle lines are drawn, making it harder to remain civil. You might prefer sorting out your differences through cool and calm communication, yet you can easily slip back into engaging in the needless drama. Instead of being forthright and expressing all your feelings today, act judiciously. A little bit of discretion goes a long way to settle everyone's frazzled nerves.”
“The warrior within may be stirred today. You might also have some self-doubt about your actions, Capricorn. Stay confident that you're on the right path at all times. There may be a bit of tension in your world, but try not to get too worked up over it. This is just a passing phase”
At least there is a little light at the end of the tunnel per tomorrow’s outlook from Horoscope.com….This is just a passing phase, let’s hope so! Still so confused on the relationship stress and battle lines though—Rene’s not even in the same time zone this week…..
Do you ever look for a “reason” for how you day is going if it feels out of control?? Or am I just a complete crazy person? LOL
Tuesday Morning Fail
Sometimes no matter how motivated you are your body will tell you no. That's what happened to me this morning. I had every intention of getting up at 5am today, doing some yoga to get balanced for the day, and then taking Stitch on his walk before making breakfast and getting ready for work.
I was even wide awake at 4am! However, I should have taken that and gotten up at 4 rather than trying to go back to sleep....because when 5am rolled around, I just could not make myself get up. It was a bit of a Tuesday morning fail on my part....
Needless to say tonight now I'll have to make time for the typical gym work out and yoga and then hopefully as the sun goes down it won't be too hot around 9pm to take the little man on a walk.
I think sometimes that I should go without a morning plan, maybe then when my body wakes me up I'll take the hint rather than waiting around for the alarm clock...

Thought of the Day...
Lack of coffee this morning and late arriving employees set me off to a bad start. So today my thought of the day is why is more of a statement and a question…
Why is it that today’s generation (my generation) feel like they are entitled to everything? Office hours don’t seem to matter to them, they arrive late and leave early, they take longer than an hour lunch, and can’t meet the basic goals that they should be each day…
Then when it gets brought to their attention they act like it is a shock they are getting reprimanded for arriving at 8:30am rather than 8 or taking the hour and a half long lunch….maybe it’s just me (and Rene because we converse about it a lot), but it just seems like people now think showing up at all is better than nothing when it comes to their job and they don’t need to put in the work because they are on a salary.
I just don’t get it. You are at the office for 9+ hours a day what else are you doing but working during that time??
I seem to ask myself this a lot now that I over seem a team of recruiters and constantly have to bring this up to them. I feel like today “management” has just become a glorified term for babysitter in the office…

Feeling Productive Thanks to the Pup!
With the weather in Dallas getting into the 100+ range my 11am daily and well into the evenings past 8pm it isn't ideal weather to walk the little man. However, with Rene being gone this week for work he's a little sad and no walks me even sadder :(
So this morning I decided I would start just getting up about an hour earlier than normal to take him for a 20-25 minute walk before it got too hot. After our walk I was able to enjoy my egg whites and turkey bacon, OJ and a cup of coffee before starting to get ready for work.
Starting the day off with a little mile long walk was really nice because it's super quite outside and it was nice to wake up without any real stress just yet.
It was nice to be able to check in on my email and catch up with my blogs that I follow from home as compared to during the day at work too.
By 6:30 I felt like I was wide awake and ready to go! So I guess this may be a new routine, though who knows how much Rene will like it when he gets home--oh well at least it will last for the 2 weeks that he's gone this month!
Enjoy yourself. It's later than you think. ~Chinese Proverb

Accounting Lectures Yuck!
I had one of my recruiters out of the office sick today and it seemed like everything just fell apart that she had been working on...and they had "no idea what went wrong" or "couldn't seem to get in touch with the contacts they needed to" which as a result just made my day pretty much awful!
Why do I feel like people don't take accountability for themselves and try to just pass the blame onto something "out of their control"? I just don't get it--oh well.
Then follow that up with a couple of hours of accounting lecture starting now (oh yeah *note the sarcasm*)--well I guess it's time to pay attention to my class...

One of those days....
I wake up in the morning and I just don’t want to go to the office because I know that something is bound to happen that I am just going to be annoyed or frustrated about in the next 10 hours while I am there. Our company has undergone a lot of changes in the past year and a half and more is still coming. As of next week my team will start over almost again completely in terms of finding new business because our Director decided that what we thought was true and inpatient medicine is not growing as quickly out the outpatient side of things. So now I will go back to what I was doing in 2009 and focus my marketing efforts on clinics again. I feel like I just can’t get ahead of things in the office right now. Add to that, I know that I have a pretty full plate because in addition to work I have my MBA program. Typically I feel like I have a plan as to how I’m going to accomplish things. And while I still am on track for my tasks (mainly school stuff) there is just something that is throwing me off.
I actually asked myself this weekend (and asked Rene) if he thought that I was making the bad decision in working towards my MBA. I’m not sure why, I know that it was a goal that I have had really since I finished undergrad that I would go back and after the wedding I just felt like it was a good time to start. Work was going great, my sales numbers were above some of the more tenured people and then in 2010 when my team was transitioned into a new direction things just kept falling off and I don’t feel like they’ve ever picked back up.
In the end I am starting to feel like I’ve hit a place in the position that I don’t know where else I will go from here. There are no pay increases for tenure or accomplishment, except in commissions. The position is not one that lends itself to being a parent (though that is FAR in the future its something to think about). And the company does not necessarily seem to invest in the people. I feel like these are all things that I have known and I feel like I’ve known that I won’t be here for the long term (as I approach 3 years with the company) but at the same time recently it’s just really built up and I find myself asking how to get out of this “funk”…..it kind of reminds me of Eeyore on Winnie the Pooh…where’s my little black rain cloud?

2011...
This year I was a bit late when it came to creating a resolution/goal/list for 2011. My main reason was that I was pretty impressed with my attainment of things from last year. Some of my plans are still there from my 2010 list (getting home to PA, keeping in better touch with friends, finishing the wedding scrapbook) but I’ve also added some new items for my 2011 List.
This year I thought of my resolutions as an ongoing list that I can add things as they come to mind that I want to do this year. I am going to start letting you all know about my ongoing “list” for this year over the next few days.
First and foremost I have decided to create a will read list of books this year. I still would love to read at least 12 but these are some of the titles I need to get to….
My Will Read Books of 2011
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest (just bought it for my Kindle!)
Re-Read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows before the movie comes out (started and sitting on the night stand)
Freedom
Full Dark, No Stars
The Art of War
The rest of the Sookie Stackhouse Novels (# 8- #10 the 11th comes out this year)
Safe Haven
The Hangman’s Daughter
More to come I’m sure….

Happy Birthday-You Are No Longer a Capricorn
"Capricorn in a Nutshell: Capricorns are very ambitious people, they always have something they are pursuing and they want their lives to be fulfilled and important. Capricorns are extremely patient and will wait a long time for something they want, when the opportunity arises, they will plan their steps carefully to others, they might appear hesitant but this is not true, they know that there is only one chance to succeed and they are filing together their information to take the proper steps to accomplish their goal with flying colors, not just second rate. Capricorns have a very active mind and strong powers of concentration. Capricorns like being in control of their surroundings and everyone in their life. Capricorns are very cautious but this only to survey the situation before leaping in, they will never make a hasty jump in. They accept change but introduce it slowly so they can get used to it and incorporate it into their life. Capricorns tend to see life in black or white, definitive's only. There are no gray areas for these are areas that are not understood and this makes Capricorn feel uncomfortable. They tend to be in control in a romantic relationship that way they are never vulnerable to another person."
I now apparently was one of the many that now have a new astrological "sign" and now fall into the realm of Sagittarius...
Sagittarius tend to aim their arrows of thought upward, being the incurable optimists of the zodiac. Sagittarius often look at the sunny side of life and the silver lining to any dark cloud. Sagittarius are honest to a fault, for you can say what's on your mind before you realize that someones feelings might be hurt. Since the Sagittarius is part horse, there is also a connection between Sagittarius and horses, be it a love of riding or an emphasis on the most powerful part of a horse: its legs and thighs. In fact, many of Sagittarius love outdoor hiking and long distance running. The Sagittarius motto is "It is better to know how to learn than to know." You seek knowledge and wisdom, never tiring of the quest for what is yet to come. Others enjoy being with you when you are in your outgoing and joyful mood, but you can become more sullen if you feel that your wings have been clipped. Even in a restrictive situation, however, you'll not lose hope--and it is this inspirational perspective that leads you to your greatest success.
I personally think that I fall much more into the Capricorn area than the Sagittarius...so even though there's been a "change" in the stars I think I'll stick with the Capricorn sign...
Did your "sign" change if so what do you think about your "new sign"....

It's coming to an end...
Now it's back to real life and work in the dreary rainy weather that has come to Dallas. As I sit in my office on the 9th floor and look out the window its completely black and I can't even see the Galleria Mall which sits across the tollway. Not exactly the best way to start out a Tuesday.
While I always love for work weeks to fly by (which this week should since its only a 3 day week then we are off to Memphis) it is bittersweet because the faster this week flies by the sooner 2011 arrives which means its time to reflect on the year and plan for the next.
I feel like I was able to accomplish a lot from my list from 2010! I read 16 books aside from textbooks, started and now 1 year through my MBA, planned a trip for our anniversary as well as a second trip in May, "officially" became Mrs. Blanco, I've gotten a little more calm when it comes to money, I've gotten back to the gym but the holidays did put a bit of a speed bump in that....2009 "issues" are so far in the past that they don't bother me at all, and I'm up to 6-7 bottles of water a day! Not too shabby! Though I will admit that the scrapbook from the wedding is still unfinished.

December?!
Monday, November 22, 2010
Oh Monday....
Our company has been undergoing a lot of changes because of new corporate compliance rules, some of which are fine others which have made like life hell since the start in June....it all came to a head this morning though when I realized that our national director was out of the office as was the senior director who is next in line. I found myself and another manager looking at each other and our compliance team and feeling like we were going to throw up realizing that the auditor was in the office a full 2 weeks earlier than expected.
This idea of an audit it something new for our company, not even do the internal people know what or how to evaluate what we do because it is so different from every other sector of the company, however that didn't seem to matter to "the auditor" nor did it matter that we had never been told how we would be evaluated, or that half of the office and half of the people that we would need to contact for information are out of the office until at least next week and some until December!! Or the fact that for months we have been hearing that our audit date would be December...no none of that seemed to matter.
All that mattered today was that this auditor made my day completely full of stress and I felt like I got nothing at all accomplished, not the best way to start our a Monday....at least I have Thursday "off" right?
Here's hoping that the rest of the week has gt to start looking up....

365 Days -- WOW that went fast!
Nonetheless, the past year has been perfect in my eyes. Everyone told us that the first year of marriage would be the hardest, but I think that we had that living in Williamsburg because this past year was a piece of cake!
In the last year I have realized that Rene will always be there to cheer me up, let me complain, and give me a shoulder to cry on. He will never stop splashing water all over the counter in the bathroom when he washes his face…he will seldom remember to close the cupboards after taking a bowl out but at least he'll help put the dishes away, as long as I close the cupboards after.
He will always dress up with me for Halloween, and while he doesn't quite understand it will indulge me when I look at shoes and handbags far too expensive to buy.
He is the best travel companion and will make last minute trips with me just because the flights are on sale. He encourages me to do everything that I want to even when I doubt myself.
We can have fun on a random night out with friends or cuddled up on the couch with pizza and beer. He is just as happy to sit on a Saturday and watch cartoons while drinking coffee as I am. But the most important is that he's mine and I could not be happier!
I was worried that "marriage" was going to be hard or scary to get into…but it has been the opposite. The past year has flown by and I look forward to the many more to come. Happy Anniversary to the love of my life!
